Music is an important part of our lives, we all have our particular tastes, whether as a performer or listener. It is found in every known culture, past and present, varying wildly between times and places. It is thought to have originated in Africa over 50 thousand years ago, evolving to become a fundamental constituent of human life. It is impossible to determine when the first musical instruments were made as they were likely made from non-durable materials such as animals skins, bone and wood, consensus is that early bone flutes appeared over 37 thousand years ago.

About Music

Did You Know?

In an effort to reward Glenn Miller upon reaching sales of one million copies of 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' , and call attention to its own success as well, RCA Victor took one of the master copies and sprayed it with gold lacquer. On February 10, 1942 the music company surprised Miller during a live radio broadcast with the 'gold record.' It was the first gold record ever awarded to a recording artist. Gold records are now presented upon the sale of only 500,000 copies, platinum records are now presented at the million mark.

The term Rock-and-Roll was first used in 1951 by Alan Freed a Cleveland disc jockey.

"Field Holler" is a type of vocal music closely related to work songs, usually associated with African American workers and slaves from before the American Civil War, but had prevalence among whites in the southern United States as well.

Jazz originated in the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a combination of African and European music traditions.

The word "opera" means "work" in Italian suggesting that it combines the arts of solo and choral singing, acting and dancing in a staged production.

The term "brass instrument" is defined by the way the sound is made, not by whether the instrument is actually made of brass.

In 2009 Country music was the most listened to rush hour radio genre during the evening commute, and second most popular in the morning commute in the USA.
