Woodstove Oven
Temperature Conversions

Very often when we find Gramdma's old recipies she has written them with temperatures in relation to her wood cookstove, refering to terms such as "bake in moderate oven", this chart should help to determine the setting on our modern oven.

This is intended as a guide only a bit of adjustment may be necessary.

With woodstoves it was never an exact science, every stove would have a character of its own, some wood gave more heat than others, often a cook was as good as they understood their stove.

Looking back at some older recipes, the instructions are pretty vague when it comes to oven temperatures, in most cases it was slow, moderate or fast oven. If you held your hand in the oven for a few seconds and it was too hot, then the oven was ready for baking.

Placing flour on a cookie sheet for a few seconds would be used as a temperature gauge, if it quickly turned brown the oven was fast or very hot, if it just started to change color the oven was slow.

To test an oven to bake a pie a sheet of white paper was placed in the oven, if it curled up brown the temperate was perfect.
