Hints for Decorating and Filling Jars

Use large mouthed jar for easier filling.

Place jar on a large piece of colored cellophane, bring up to the top, gather and tie with raffia. Attach a gift tag with instructions.

Be sure to pack the ingredients tightly when adding to the jar, especially brown sugar. (Try crumbling the brown sugar to give it an even texture before packing into jar. Recipes with brown sugar should be used within weeks of making because the sugar will turn rock hard the longer it sits.

Attach objects such as cookie cutters, wooden spoons, measuring spoons, utensils, a mini rolling pin, bells, hot sauces with spicy recipes, crackers in a plastic bag attached to jar for soup recipes, store bought ornaments or homemade ornaments.

Always use clean jars and make sure they are dry before adding dry ingredients.

Try to match the theme of your Gift in a Jar with the decorations you use on the jar. Country checks or brown for cocoa mixes and bright red or gigham for cranberry and apple mixes.

To make the Gift Tag , a great idea if making a cookie mix is to cut around a cookie cutter and print your instructions on the shape, then add the cookie cutter with a ribbon to the jar.

To make a Fabric Lid that fits inside the jar rim for your Mason Jar, simply cut a circle of fabric a little bit bigger than the inside round metal lid. Cut a piece of quilt batting the same size as the lid, glue the quilt batting down first and then the fabric to the metal round lid. Trim even around the edges. When you screw on the outer metal band, everything will be neatly inside.
