Gourd Art

Gourd art involves creating works of art by painting on dried gourd shells based on the principles of pointillism. During the process, gourd surfaces may be carved, sanded, burned, dyed, and polished. Gourd decoration and pyrography, is an ancient tradition in Africa, Asia, Central and South America as well as among the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Gourd crafting and painting has evolved from early hand carvings to the modern day use by some of electric wood burners and high-speed pen-shaped drills that can be used to inscribe most any design.

The vines will love many long drinks of water throughout the summer. But when autumn approaches, do not give them any supplemental waterings. Let the vines wither and die as winter approaches. After the first frost, cut the the gourds from the vines and put them in a dry warm place on a screen or hang them. It is important that air can circulate all about them, drying them.

Be safe and wear goggles and a mask when cutting gourds. Gourd Dust may cause allergies.

Any finish that is used on wood can be used to finish a gourd.
