Easter 101

One of the most joyous celebrations of the year, Easter embraces both the Resurrection's promise of eternal life and the rebirth we see in the nature of each spring.
Today, as in the past, bunnies, chicks, colored eggs, and spring flowers enchant both children and adults at Eastertime.

Easter HIstory and Traditions

According to christian beliefs Jesus Christ died on a cross on a Friday almost two thousand years ago. On the following Sunday, Christ rose from the dead and, in doing so, proved that He is the Son of God. The day Jesus died and was buried is known as Good Friday. The following Sunday is Easter Sunday.

Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Son of God each year between March 22nd and April 25th (the first Sunday after the vernal equinox).

Religious celebrations include family gatherings and special Easter church services.

The Easter Bunny

Most probably the Easter Bunny originated in Europe possibly with pagan rather than religious roots.

A festival called Eastre was held during the spring equinox by the Saxons of Northern Europe to honor a pagan figure called Eastre (or Eostre) who was celebrated as the goddess of spring. Her earthly symbol was the rabbit, which was also known as a symbol of fertility.

The legend of the Easter Bunny bringing eggs appears to have originated from southwestern Germany. In legend, the Easter Bunny brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy, and sometimes toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter. The baskets may be eft in a designated place or hidden somewhere in the house or garden for the children to find when they wake up in the morning, giving rise to the tradition of the Easter egg hunt.
