Internet & Networking
| Even with all the safe guards available there are still many people hesitant to connect to the internet, fortunately in this day and age most of the fears can be eliminated by taking the proper steps to secure your computer. The first step is to get informed so you know "FUD" from the facts, many companies exist simply to sell useless services to paranoid computer uses to keep them in fear of the unknown.
Think about it, what does the average computer owner have on their computer that is worth the time of a hacker to break into it, probably very little, more people voluntarily give away bank account and credit card information than have it stolen from their hard drives. Never reply to emails asking for this information, even if it looks like it is an official request from your bank or credit card company. Don't store your bank account number or pin number on your computer, type it in when you login to online banking, this takes a little longer but is a lot more secure. Don't forget to logout and close the browser when you are finished. it is a good habit to get into in case you ever use public computers. Having your computer infected with a virus or worm is a valid concern, but can be prevented by installing system updates as soon as they come out and running anti-virus and security software. The trick here is run software that works from a reliable software company such as Symantec or McAfee, there are free solutions as well, unfortunately some of them are so "in your face" that they become a nuisance to use. |
